The Pleasant Ridge Historic Commission announces Dr. Ted Ligibel for their 2019 Speaker Series. Dr. Ligibel will be presenting “Researching Your Historic Home” on August 8th at 7pm at the Pleasant Ridge Community Center located at 4 Ridge Road. Ted J Ligibel, Ph.D.

Ted J. Ligibel began his career in historic preservation in Toledo, Ohio in 1974. After several years as a grassroots preservationist working in non-profit, university, and governmental sectors he joined the Eastern Michigan University faculty in 1991 and was appointed as director of its graduate Historic Preservation program in 1999, a post he held until 2018.

Ligibel is Advisor Emeritus to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Michigan Historic Preservation Network and served as Chair of the National Council for Preservation Education. Ligibel is the immediate past chair of the Governor’s Michigan Historic Preservation Review Board. He participated in several advising sessions for US Presidential administrations (Clinton and Bush), including meeting with the Secretary of the Interior concerning the significance of the River Raisin Battlefield, now a National Battlefield.

He has written numerous works on historic preservation including most recently, the 3rd edition of Historic Preservation: An Introduction to its History, Principles, and Practice (2018), co-authored with architects Norman and Ilene Tyler, and which is the nation’s best-selling textbook on historic preservation.

In addition to other accolades, he was awarded the 2018 “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Michigan Historic Preservation Network; Professional Recognition status from the Association for Preservation Technology International in 2018; and the “Teaching Excellence Award” sponsored annually by Eastern Michigan University’s Alumni Association.
