Notice: New Traffic Control at Woodward

Please be advised that we have posted no turn on red signs on Oakland Park and Sylvan at Woodward.

This change was approved by the City Commission at the September 11, 2018 meeting. There is a history of bicyclists and pedestrians being hit by cars turning right onto Woodward at this intersection. The majority of incidents involve a person riding or walking along the Woodward sidewalk in the opposite direction of traffic. In these incidents the driver’s attention is focused on oncoming Woodward traffic and as the driver proceeds, they hit the person in the crosswalk coming from the other direction.

It is important to note that when there is a red light on Oakland Park or Sylvan, there is a white crosswalk symbol, so bicyclists and pedestrians have the right-of-way. It is not the pedestrian or bicyclist’s responsibility to stop if they have the right-of-way, and it should not be incumbent on them to take extraordinary measures to avoid being hit by a driver when the crosswalk signal is white.

Please be patient at this intersection and wait for the green light to complete your turn onto Woodward.
